Berkeley-Oakland Midrasha provides Jewish learning to 8th-12th grade students in Alameda and western Contra Costa counties in a supplementary setting. It offers a broad range of dynamic educational opportunities - formal and informal - designed to support a diverse community. Classes run the gamut of Jewish topics - from social justice and art to Talmud and philosophy to Jewish music, food, and media. All our programs take place in the context of a loving safe space for teens.
Teens take two classes (a grade level "core" class + an elective) and take part in other campus programming. Classes encourage personal engagement with Jewish identity, ethics, culture, and thought.
Teens celebrate shabbat together along with teens from Contra Costa Midrasha, Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon.
Hadracha creates Midrasha teen leaders by teaching educational skills in a fun participatory way. Do you have a great idea for a class, event, or celebration? Hadracha is our monthly Teen Leadership Pizza Dinner where you can put your ideas into action! We will be doing a deep dive into what it takes to be a leader and learn from tools other successful leaders have already discovered. Over the course of this program each participant will find their very own leadership style. It’s an opportunity to play games, work on leadership skills, and plan Midrasha events. It will be a blast!
Ever wanted to seriously explore traditional Jewish texts with other teens? This class is an opportunity to go deep into the foundations of Jewish thought and practice while noshing on some yummy kosher cereal. Students will study classic rabbinic literature from the Talmud and Midrash, learning both content and methodology. Knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary.
